The 1,172-mile pipeline was rerouted to just miles from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation land. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has been concerned about the potential hazards with drinking water, as part of the pipeline would be under the Missouri River. In addition, sacred sites along the pipeline corridor were destroyed and the tribe was concerned about others.

Each December Sealaska and Juneau Native partners, host a Juneau Holiday Information. The Juneau Holiday Information Fair will include information on services provided by each of the event partners. In addition to information booths there will be Alaska Native artist tables, information from local service agencies, children’s activities and photos with Santa.

Juneau Community Foundation is pleased to announce a new partner for the Juneau Housing First Project. Sealaska has committed $25,000 towards facility construction. Housing First will provide 32 units of permanent supportive housing and a community facility for Juneau's most vulnerable, chronically homeless adults. The distribution payment will occur in late November, earlier than in years past. Sealaska’s short-term financial priority is to be profitable before investment and ANCSA Section7(i) income. Dr. Baines went to high school in Phoenix, Arizona and at the time had no intention of going to college. He wanted to join the Marines to see the world. Instead, in 1972, he took a job at a sawmill in his hometown of Metlakatla, Alaska. It is exciting to see an Alaska tribe exercise its authority as a sovereign government. Alaska tribes like CTA have the knowledge and leadership to self-govern. As a result, CTA is providing positive impacts to its members, residents of Prince of Wales Island and the community. With lands in trust, CTA can increase its activities for the benefits of its membership.
