Senator Lisa Murkowski and Congressman Don Young have both introduced legislation to finalize Sealaska’s land entitlement under the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA).
Murkowski originally introduced bills in 2007 and 2009. S.730 reflects major revisions incorporating public comments gathered at town hall meetings in Southeast communities, and from hundreds of emails and letters sent to Murkowski’s office. Senator Mark Begich is a co-sponsor of the bill.
Young introduced similar legislation in the House.
