Attention Sealaska students! Applications open for scholarships!

Attention Sealaska students!

Scholarship applications for the 2020–2021 academic year are now open to Sealaska shareholder and descendant students. Every year Sealaska awards hundreds of full-time and part-time merit-based scholarships to our student leaders.

Since 1981, Sealaska has been funding scholarships as part of our long-time commitment to education. Scholarship recipients have gone on to become scholars and leaders in our Sealaska communities and beyond — including board youth advisors, Alaska Native corporation executives, language scholars and more.

In 2018 and for the first time in its history, Sealaska increased the scholarship endowment fund by $10 million to a total of $15.7 million. Last year the average individual scholarship was $2,500, an increase over the previous year. To date, we have awarded approximately 11,000 scholarships totaling $16.4 million.

This round will be the second year that scholarships are available to part-time students. Last year 62 scholarships were awarded to students enrolled part-time.

“Our scholarships are a long-term investment in our most important asset,” said Sealaska Board Chair Joe Nelson. “They also provide the most promising return when the recipients come back home and put their education to work for all of us. We are especially proud of the new funding for part-time students. Many of those students are already providing critical leadership to their community, organizations and families.”
